SASHIKO STITCHING

2025

Sashiko (刺し子) is a traditional Japanese form of decorative and functional stitching. It literally translates to "little stabs," referring to the running stitch technique used. What drew me to this technique is its reflection of the Japanese philosophy 'mottainai', a dedication to reducing waste and making do with what you already have, echoing the nature of my botanical work.

What you see below are explorations of the Moyozashi technique. It is a style of Japanese Sashiko embroidery characterised by long, evenly spaced running stitches that create intricate patterns without intersecting or touching. The making process is deeply meditative, each stitch a quiet act of focus, rhythm and presence.
